Volkswagen’s rapid Golf R Estate arriving in Spring 2015

The 2014 Los Angeles Motor Show was chosen by Volkswagen as the venue to pull the covers off its rapid new Golf R Estate. The model is the latest in the fourth-generation Golf R family and represents the more practical alternative to the standard hatchback.

More space, no less power

Powering the hot estate is the same 2.0-litre direct injection four-cylinder turbo charged engine fitted to the three and five-door hatchbacks, which produces 296bhp and sends it to the road via a six-speed dual shift gearbox. A four-wheel drive system is also present to help the car surge from 0-60mph in around 5.1 seconds. The top speed is limited at 155mph, and the R Estate returns a satisfying 40.3mpg while emitting 163g/km of CO2.

This power is ample to pull the heavier loads taken by the model, with an additional 262 litres of storage capacity offered at the rear. With the rear bench folded a superb 1,620 litres of cargo can be carried, and the model is also a capable tower.

R-specific design

Just like its hatchback sibling, the estate boasts an exclusive design that only R-badged models benefit from. The front bumper and air intakes are unique to the R range, as is the sporty grille design and Xenon headlamps with accompanying LED daytime running lights. The extended rear holds a quad exhaust set-up as evidence of the muscular engine, while a gloss black diffuser and aero flaps on the D-pillars are further high-performance elements. Contributing to an assured drive is the option for stylish 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels.

The cabin carries the exterior’s athletic theme inside with Alcantara or leather sports seats accompanied by carbon fibre dashboard trim and ambient lighting. A simple dashboard arrangement has also been applied to create an uncluttered interior environment.

Order books open in the spring

The arrival of the Golf R Estate means typical Volkswagen high-performance can be enjoyed with no compromise on practicality or efficiency. The model is widely expected to impress as a capable all-rounder, and motorists in the UK can put their names in the order book from the spring of this year.
