Meet the extreme cousin of the well-loved Volkswagen Beetle. Evolutionary progression sees the modest Beetle grow into a powerful super-bug. The Volkswagen Beetle Rallycross is ready for rough and tumble on the most brutal of rally tracks.

Revealed at the recent Chicago Motor Show this racetrack fiend delivers a whopping 560bhp from the turbo charged direct injection TSI engine. This powerful competitor is set to make its rally debut at the Summer X Games in Austin, Texas and will battle rivals in the 2014 Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.

For the contest, Volkswagen will partner with Andretti Autosport to create the VW Andretti Rallycross team. Behind the wheel of the Rockstar Energy Beetle will be the former GRC champion, Tanner Foust. The star is renowned for his keen rally driving and clever stunt skills and hosts the US version of Top Gear. NASCAR victor, Scott Speed, will drive the 7UP entry for the team.

Michael Andretti, CEO of Andretti Autosport, expressed his enthusiasm for the forthcoming contest. “I’m thrilled to be entering the series, and especially happy about teaming with Volkswagen. We are excited about our driver line-up of Tanner [Foust] and Scott [Speed]; I believe we have the best drivers in the series and will be a top contender”, he said.

The competition begins in May where the team will initially drive two modified Polo rally cars. The spirited new GRC Beetle will make its rally debut in June. The Rallycross challenge involves intense high energy driving on a dirt and pavement course which involves an extreme 70-foot jump.
