The Car of the Year (CotY) award is a prestigious international prize judged by a panel of esteemed motoring journalists across Europe. The title is granted to the car which is the most exceptional vehicle to have been released onto the market in the previous year. A wide range of factors are taken into consideration by the panel when making their decision including design, comfort, safety, economy, handling, performance, functionality, environmental requirements, driver satisfaction, and price.

The nominees for the 2014 awards have now been whittled down to seven outstanding candidates. These are the all-new Mazda3, ŠKODA Octavia, BMW i3, Citroën C4 Picasso, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Peugeot 308 and the Tesla S.

The all-new Mazda3 has been singled out as it demonstrates strong individuality and impressive technological advancements. Breaking free from the norm is the defining design focus behind all of Mazda’s vehicles and the all-new Mazda3 certainly does this. The stand-out style of the all-new Mazda3 is entrancing, with textural dynamic lines denoting the athletic capabilities of the car. The advanced SKYACTIV Technology systems make for a superior drive, with a new strengthened lightweight structure and a range of innovative engine options including the feisty 150bhp SKYACTIV-D diesel option. Safety is paramount too with the addition of the forward-thinking City Brake Support system, which helps to prevent low speed collisions.

The ŠKODA Octavia has received rave reviews this year and receives a place in the top seven due to its flexible practicality, versatile power range and intelligent safety features. The car’s vast boot capacity beats all of its rivals offering plentiful storage space, and the extended wheelbase means increased passenger comfort with extra leg room. The efficiency of the new Octavia is incredible with the improved flowing body structure and decreased overall vehicle weight, as well as advanced precision technology, all combining to offer heightened performance. The 1.6-litre 105bhp diesel unit offers outstandingly low tax-free emissions at just 99g/km. Clever safety features include the brake pre-fill system which anticipates sharp braking and optimises swift stopping.
