2016 will see a new version of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid making its way to UK showrooms. The SUV returns with a petrol-electric option for the first time, joining many other cars in the new Toyota line-up with hybrid capabilities.
In looks, the latest RAV4 has a sharper, cleaner style. The crossover feels poised and ready, with a subtle forward lean. Clever shaping also means the cabin and boot are very generously sized.
Alongside the exterior changes, the interior layout is a little different compared to previous generations. It welcomes you in and surrounds you with storage spaces and the latest Toyota technologies. The new RAV4 can also boast more standard equipment than ever before. A special Business Edition shows the manufacturer’s push for the SUV to become more of a company vehicle.
Toyota has also pioneered the hybrid car, and bringing this technology to the RAV4 results in whisper-quiet driving at lower speeds. The 2.5-litre petrol engine is carried over from the Lexus NX 300h, paired with an electric motor. This combination can generate as much as 55.4mpg combined and emits only 118g/km of CO2.
It starts up without a sound – pressing the start button brings the instrument panel and engine system to life with no noise at all. A total of 195bhp supports the impressively quick acceleration. At up to 40mph, the crossover will travel silently for around a mile before the petrol power kicks in.
